Classes and Education

The more you know about the birthing experience, the more prepared you'll be when the big day finally arrives. With that in mind, we have developed several classes for expectant families. You can attend prenatal classes in any order and at any time during your pregnancy.

Classes we offer include:

  • Healthy Pregnancy Class: This class includes a discussion of preconception planning and its effects on a healthy pregnancy. It also contains information about nutrition, exercise and medications during pregnancy.
  • Prepared Childbirth Class/Lamaze: This prepared childbirth class-which includes Lamaze training-is for couples who wish to experience delivery together. The classes are taught by certified instructors. You must preregister, and there is a fee for this class.
  • Big Kids and Babies/Family Classes: Bring your older children to our Big Kids and Babies class to make them feel part of the birthing experience. They'll get to tour the unit, practice holding a "baby" and learn about some of the changes that will be going on at home after the birth. The class also offers parents an overview of changes in labor, delivery, postpartum and newborn care.
  • D.A.D. (Direct Assistance for Dad): A class about the father's role in pregnancy and parenting.
  • Newborn Care Class: This class covers what to expect with a newborn. The class provides an overview of breast- and bottle-feeding, dental care and baby care during the hospital stay and at home.
  • Breastfeeding Class: In this monthly class, a registered nurse conducts fact-based informative discussions about various aspects of breastfeeding.
  • Orientation and Anesthesia Class: During this class, a registered nurse from the perinatal unit will give you an overview of childbirth and tell you what to expect during your hospital stay. Additionally, an anesthesiologist will present a lecture about anesthesia during childbirth. This important class is mandatory for you and your support person. It is offered twice each month.
